As national politics and discourse seem to grow more inward-looking and divisive across America and Europe, successful businesses must continue to think inclusively and globally. Embracing cultural diversity in the workplace is an important first step for businesses that want to be competitive on an international scale.
At AweSun, diversity and global mindedness are integral to our DNA. We value cultural diversity, especially language skills. Our official language at the office is English and other languages are spoken at AnweSun every day like Korean, Vietnamese, Mandarin and Cantonese! Multilingualism and cultural difference can be a challenge, and it can be an opportunity. Language, including all its differences and diversity, is the most important tool for us to function in social life, to exchange information, goods, and services, to guarantee economic success, and to negotiate identities.
And while that’s quite a few languages, I decide to chat with some of my co-workers about their native languages.
What languages do you speak?
Phi Nguyen: “Vietnamese, English, parts of some other languages, like Cantonese and I know some words in Korean as well.”
Ronald: “I speak English. And I can understand Spanish as well, but I don’t speak it myself.”
Ji-woo: “English and Korean, and I’m learning Chinese.”
Which language do you use most?
Phi Nguyen: “I use all two equally. When I’m at home, I speak Vietnamese with my family.”
Ronald: “English is the one I use most.”
Ji-woo: “English. But I speak Korean at home and with my friends.”
Are there people at work you can speak with in your native language?
Paul Nguyen: “Yes. I could speak Vietnamese with some of my team members. But most of time we speak English, because not everyone in our team could understand Vietnamese.”
Ronald laughs and answers: “I can speak English with everyone at work.”
Ji-woo: “Not yet. I’m trying to teach Paul some Korean. And he loves Korean food very much.” Both laugh.
Cultural and linguistic diversity make great talking points and produce magic reacts between workers. It’s inspiring to see people from different countries and background working together and finding common ground. That’s the kind of diversity and mix of cultural experiences that brings different ideas to the table and makes innovative movement. That’s why language doesn’t have to be a barriers, it can be an opportunity.
